While Sony has long been one of the world’s largest producers of television and video equipment, in the mid nineties the company suddenly entered the crowded video game market with the introduction of a revolutionary new product. In 1994, the company released the wildly popular Sony PlayStation. A few years later, they introduced the most popular video game console in the history of the world, the PlayStation 2.
How popular was it? Since 2000, the product has sold roughly one hundred and forty million units. As you might expect, the device was followed by another successful offering, the PlayStation 3, which also sold well. The company later developed a popular line of portable video game devices that they appropriately labeled the PlayStation Portable (PSP).
Of their many business successes, their domination of the video game market in a relatively short period of time has to rank high on the list. Where do they go from here? Sony games are currently one of the market leaders in the profitable video game market and they show no signs of slowing down. Though they do not have a new video game console scheduled for release anytime soon, they are one of the top producers of video games, with dozens of new releases each year. In the remainder of this article we are going to take a look at some of the most popular and anticipated new releases.

Shortly after the original PlayStation game console took off, Sony established a set of specific criteria to determine which games they would later release or re-release as Greatest Hits titles. In the beginning, these games had to sell at least 150,000 copies in the first year alone. However, as the popularity of the console increased, this number was raised to 250,000. Finally, when the PlayStation 2 was released, games could only become Greatest Hits if they sold an incredible 400,000 copies in only 9 months time.
Sony Games later extended the program to the PlayStation Portable (PSP), though will slightly lower sales requirements. To be considered a Greatest Hit, a PSP game has to sell at least a quarter of a million copies in 9 months.
Finally, in 2008, the company included the PlayStation 3 in their Greatest Hits Program. Of course, the sales requirements had to be raised for their latest offering. According to Sony Games, to qualify for the Greatest Hits program, a PlayStation 3 game must sell at least a half a million copies in 10 months. These games typically sell from $29.99.
Generally speaking, Sony GamesGreatest Hits titles are just re-releases of popular titles with different packaging and a lower price. But occasionally, a game is afforded a “special edition label,” which means that it has extra features that were not included in the original version. Oftentimes, these special features are nothing more than new demos or soundtracks. At most, users will find a few minor improvements, maybe a new bonus level or vibration functionality.
